Head of School’s Message

Dear Parents,

I am sure you are all reeling from yet more terrorist attacks last Friday evening in Paris. It seems that nowhere can really be considered truly safe, but relatively speaking we can at least be thankful that we are in Tokyo at this time. Our thoughts go out to all the families of the dead and injured families of this and all other such terrorist attacks. This is yet another one in a long line of terrorist activity, on the land or in the air.

From a different perspective on safety, this week teachers had a practical session to be prepared in case of fire. Although TIS met the fire department safety requirements when this campus was built, one of the recommendations from the accreditation visit at the end of 2013 was that we should have more ‘child friendly’ escape chutes. These have been installed and this week, we have had the construction team as well as fire department personnel, here to ‘put us through our paces’. They will be back next Tuesday for the middle school chute practice. These chutes should only be used as a last resort in the case of stairwells being blocked, but we are very pleased to have these as an additional contingency plan.

M.A.P. in MATH

Chris will talk more in detail about these later in this newsletter but we conducted our first trial this week. There were a few glitches and we have learned a lot from these and will be making adjustments for the next round in the spring.

Please note that these pertain to the in-house schedule and do not impact on after school clubs. They retain their normal scheduled days.
