Relevant Learning Model
This approach is congruent with best teaching practice in progressive education systems throughout the developed world. When appropriate, the teachers carefully incorporate student’s own inquiries, theories and ideas. They do this systematically ensuring all the necessary academic benchmarks are covered and individuals are supported and stretched to their potential. Problem solving, decision-making, questioning, critical thinking, and collaborating are some of the key ‘real world skills’, which are at the core of inquiry learning • Our school mission statement • IB learner profile These values are reflected on our walls, in student and teacher work, heard in conversations, are referred to when discussing behavioral expectations, are part and parcel of our decision making process and role-modeled in all levels of our community. Understanding our mission, the IB learner profile and attitudes creates a learning environment that encourages living these positive human characteristics. At TIS, children are empowered learners. They are actively involved in deciding aspects of their learning, classroom management and school-wide decisions. Empowerment is also achieved when the learner feels their learning is relevant to their lives. Our units of inquiry are uniquely designed for each grade level. Topics have relevance because they are often linked to a global topic that analyses the present and future needs of our world. How do we empower students at TIS? Click on the following files for examples of the sort of ways we promote this. Please also visit the assessment sections of this website.
TIS is committed to inquiry-based learning. Students are encouraged to ‘think first’ for themselves throughout the learning process.
Focusing on developing positive human characteristics and attitudes is another corner of the triangle at TIS. The foundation for this learning is integrated via two core value statements:
The third corner of the triangle focuses on empowering people to actively participate in a decision-making process that leads to a high level of motivation, interest and engagement.
