REMINDER: As per all our previous communications in the TIS TIMES, TIS School Wear is now purchased directly through the company called ‘Top of the Class’. Please go to their website to view and to order. Go to SHOP BY SCHOOL in the menu. http://www.schooluniform.ne.jp. Remember the website can also be found under the parents’ tab of the TIS website.

N.B. Some lines are discounted as we will be discontinuing them once stocks have been sold, hence limited sizes with some items and there are new items yet to come on line such as the new P.E. shorts and the khaki skort which will be ready in August.

STAFFING UPDATE

Sadly, every year we say goodbye to some teachers and staff. All our leaving teachers and staff have contributed to TIS in numerous ways irrespective of how long they have been at TIS. We thank each and every one of them and wish them, all the very best in their new endeavours.

Josie Watts, Grade 4B Teacher: After four years at TIS, we say good bye to Josie who has taught Grades 1 & 4 during that time. Amongst all her other contributions, she will be a hard act to follow leading the “TIS All Stars!” Josie, accompanied by husband Geoff, will be moving to Moscow where Josie will be taking on the role of PYP Coordinator at The Anglo-American School of Moscow. Congratulations on your promotion and all the best Josie!

Tom Pearce, Grade 2A Teacher: Tom arrived with Kathy from New Zealand in January 2014 and we were so lucky to be able to hire him to take over from a teacher who was about to go on maternity leave in Grade 2. Now Tom, who is very sad to be leaving TIS, is nevertheless very excited about his baby son who is due on June 5th and is looking forward to being a full time parent next year. Tom has been very involved with our service initiatives in the lower primary school. All the best Tom!

Christine Olsen, Teacher Librarian: Christine will be leaving TIS after one year. She has enjoyed sharing her passion about helping young minds to learn, knowing that children who read most frequently for pleasure and research are those with high academic achievement as well as life long learning skills. She is looking at a number of opportunities in the United States and in the United Kingdom.

Niki Kitao, Japanese Teacher part time: Niki joined TIS in August 2014 and has worked across several grade levels in the Primary Division. She is leaving to pursue higher education studies here in Tokyo. We wish her all the best in her academic pursuits.

Liezl Sato, Teacher Assistant Grade 2: Liezl will be very much missed in Grade 2 where she has been for 4 years. Liezl and her family will be returning home to New York. We are sure Liezl will be able to put her creative display skills to use in her new home.

Rhodri Brown, Student Assistant Grade 4: TIS will miss Rhodri who has been with Grade 4 this school year. We wish him well as he returns to Wales to embark upon his teacher training. Good Luck Rhodri!

Cara O’Connell, MS Student Assistant: Cara has been at TIS for the past two years and has been a full participant in the middle school. Cara is returning to the UK to do postgraduate studies in either law or teaching, having been accepted for both courses.

Andrew Last, currently Teacher Assistant in Grade 1, will be moving to the position of Student Assistant in Grade 5. Welcome to your new role Andy!

Wayne Ashcroft , currently regular substitute teacher across the school, will be taking over from Cara, working as a Student Assistant in the Middle School. Welcome to your new role Wayne!

NEW Akiko Harjula-Kikuchi, Japanese teacher part time: Akiko is a Japanese national who firstly qualified as a teacher in Japan and then went on to higher education in Georgia USA and the UK. She has been teaching Japanese language in London for the last twenty one years and for three years prior to that in a middle school and university in Georgia. She is looking forward to returning to Japan to be closer to her aging parents.

NEW Kathryn Thornton will be teaching Grade 2 A: Kathryn is an experienced, Australian certified elementary school teacher. She is currently the literacy coordinator at a school in Australia. Kathryn has a BEd majoring in Advanced Literacy. Kathryn has Australian teaching experience which includes a very strong background in inquiry learning.

NEW Nancy Staal will be teaching Grade 4B: Nancy is a highly experienced, USA certified, elementary teacher with a BA in Humanities and an MEd in Education. Nancy is a consultant for the National (USA) Writing Project and a literacy coach and she has written for the National (USA) Council of Teachers of Mathematics magazine. Nancy has USA and International (IB) teaching experience.

NEW Tim Staal will be Teacher Librarian: Tim is a highly experienced teacher and teacher librarian. He is a USA certified Language Arts and Library Media teacher and he also holds a BA in Library Science and an MEd in Technology and Gifted & Talented teaching. Tim has USA and International teaching experience. Tim is also an Apple Distinguished Educator.

NEW Kaori Nam, Teacher Assistant Grade 1: Kaori is a Japanese national who is educated in the USA with a MEd in Teaching. She is a newly-qualified, USA certified, teacher. She lives in Chiba having recently moved back from undertaking her teaching studies in Hawaii.

NEW Kenta Shimizu, Teacher Assistant Grade 2: Kenta is currently employed as a children’s instructor at My Gym and has extensive experience as children’s camp counsellor. He is a musician and band member and was formerly an international school student himself at Nishimachi IS and ASIJ.

CHANGE OF TITLE:

Kristine Adelsboell will be continuing with her current roles but with the title change to Middle School, Vice Principal & MYP Coordinator.
