PSA News

Dear TIS parents What a fun way to start November! The children, staff and parents all thoroughly enjoyed Sports Day today. Well done to all of the participants! Yesterday, Kristine, Greg, Josie and Tonya hosted a workshop on the TIS literacy programme. The session was well attended and feedback from parents was very positive. The teachers did a great job of explaining how Common Core is delivered through the framework of the Readers-Writers Workshop and the parents got a good understanding of how literacy is taught at TIS to children of differing language abilities. We would like to say a huge thank you to Kristine, Greg, Josie and Tonya for their time and effort with this presentation. The literacy workshop provided lots of useful information and also provided context for the Writing Workshop on November 12th. Please see the details of this workshop in the following pages. We have some important dates for you to add to your calendar next week: 9th &10th November: Professional Development days; no school for students 12th November: Grade 1, Grade 4 and Grade 7 Bake Sale & Columbia University Writing Workshop 13th November: Deadline for grant applications 5th December:TIS Famous Festive Family Fiesta For more detailed information about these events, please see the flyers below. PSA Grant Program 2015-2016

PSA GRANT PROGRAM 2015/16 Program Outline: The Parents Support Association (“PSA”) raises funds throughout the year, holding events such as Pizza Friday, Bake Sales, Popsicles, Popcorn and used uniform sales (“Fundraising Events”). All profits from these activities are donated back to TIS via a Grant Program. The aim of the Grant Program is to enhance the student experience at TIS. Last year the Grant Program provided LittleBits electronic kits, cameras, gym equipment, music instruments and a large collection of classroom books worth approximately ¥1,300,000. This year the PSA will be donating ¥1,350,000 of profits raised from last year’s Fundraising Events and an additional ¥1,350,000 of profits left from last year’s Cherry Blossom Fair. This is after giving away ¥1,450,000 to outside charities and funding PSA events such as parent education workshops involving outside speakers and subsidizing the upcoming Holiday Dance. In total this year’s Grant Program will be ¥2,700,000 (approximately US$22,500).   Eligibility: Applicants: The Grant Program is open to all of the TIS community. Teachers, parents, staff and students are all invited to identify areas of need and submit a grant request. Item/Project Request: Please consider the following guidelines when making a request: The grant request should not be fundamental to the education offered at TIS.  Such needs are covered by tuition fees. We are looking for the “nice-to-haves”. There should be an identifiable, not necessarily academic, benefit to the students.  The nature of the benefit could be social, cultural, athletic, etc. The item or project should have school or staff ownership, such that the continued involvement by the PSA is not necessary. Whilst ideally grant requests should benefit a large number of students, applications aimed at a narrower group of students or staff will also be considered. If the grant request relates to a long-term project spanning more than one year, the request must be divided into smaller, identifiable parts.  However, please be aware that the PSA cannot guarantee future allocation of funds in subsequent years.   All monies need to be spent by the end of May 2016. Additionally, we ask that prior to submitting the application, preliminary research be undertaken in order to provide an approximation of the project’s cost and feasibility.   Application Assessment Process: Following the application deadline, all requests will be reviewed by the PSA Grant Committee comprised of the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Fundraising Committee member of the PSA and a final decision will be made in conjunction with the school’s Leadership Team headed by Lorraine Izzard. All applicants will then be notified whether or not they have been successful in their application. We are targeting to make announcements by December 11, 2015.   How to Apply: Please complete and submit the attached Grant Program request form by NOVEMBER 13th 2015. Completed application forms may be returned to the school office for collection or emailed to Rika Okiura, Vice President of the PSA. Please keep a copy of your application for your records. Please direct any queries to Rika Okiura. We look forward to receiving your submissions. The Parents Support Association   2015-2016 PSA Grant Program Application...

PSA Events for Students – Bake Sale

Grade 1, Grade 4 and Grade 7 Bake sale Thursday12th November Tasty Treats needed! Grade 1, 4 and 7 parents are asked to send in 10 individually wrapped, home-made or store bought baked goodies for children across the whole school to enjoy at break time. Please see the details from the fund-raising team below and note that the school has a nut-free policy. The bake sale is a day the children really enjoy! If you would like your child(ren) to enjoy one of these tasty treats, please send in ¥100 per child.   The Bake Sale is coming! Hello parents! Three times per year we hold a Bake Sale day where children are able to purchase treats at morning snack time. We will be holding our first bake sale of the year on Thursday, November 12th. Each item will be sold for 100 yen and each child will be able to purchase bake sale items. In order to help us make this sale a success, we rely on parents to donate baked goods (or purchased items) and send them in with your child on sale day. Here are a few things you should know: Please send in 10 items individually wrapped with your child on your designated date. The Fundraising Team will be in the lobby to collect the treats as the children enter school. It also greatly helps to list the ingredients used in the baking. This could be a piece of paper that comes with the treats (to be displayed at the sale), or an individual label on the treat. This helps kids with food sensitivities or allergies make better decisions.? Please do not send in items with peanuts, peanut oil, or any nuts as TIS is a nut free school. There are several peanut allergies in the school that range from mild to severe, so we would like to be as safe as possible. For parents of children with allergies: We have a list of children with allergies, but it would be very helpful if you could please send in a separate treat for your child that we can give them during the sale so they are included in the fun. This way we and YOU are assured that they are not receiving anything with ingredients that they cannot/should not have. Please label the item(s) clearly with your child’s name and teacher’s name so we make sure they get their treat. Thank you for your assistance. Please pay special attention to the classes assigned to bring in treats this Thursday: Thursday November 12th – Grades 1, 4, 7 If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact: Agnes Ouellette, Maia Lampert, or Gonneke Houwing: As always, thank you very much for your support!
