Interschool Table Tennis Tournament On Thursday April 28th, TIS students played a table tennis tournament. The British School, Nishimachi, and Montessori School came to play. There were different tournaments for boys and girl and 3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th graders. TIS had at least one player in the championship game for each of the levels we played in. The 3rd and 4th grade final was between Aaron Igari and Theo Andrews. Theo won! Max Otter from 7th grade took second place against a boy who was incredible. It was fun to play against other schools and compete for TIS. By: TJ Robbins 3A and Coach...

Into The Woods Interview #1

Into The Woods Interview – by Mason Wang, 7B On May 26 middle school students will perform the musical ‘Into The Woods’. Each week I will interview one cast member for TIS Times. This week I interviewed Joni Anttoni Mäkinen from Grade 7. Here it is! M: Which character are you playing? J: I am playing Jack M: What sort of character is Jack? J: Playing around a 10/11 year old boy I am assuming. He’s pretty bored and desperate. I have to say that he is also quite curious and brave. There is a lot of action. For example, he climbs the bean stalk. M: What do you like most about your character? J: It doesn’t take that much effort to get into character. I do need to do something to change the character but  I don’t need to for example completely change my voice and behavior. I also like that I get to do a solo and that he is one of the main characters. M: What is your favorite line? J: Probably it is “Giant in the sky’’ because it is in my big solo song and I like singing and I think I do it well. M: How do you feel when you perform up on stage? J: I don’t feel very nervous on the stage because I had practice and already have some experience with rehearsals and recitals so I don’t feel nervous anymore when I go on stage except when I don’t know the line or if others don’t know a line in the scene. Other than that I am quite confident because I know what I am doing and I can act...

Into The Woods Interview #2

Into The Woods Interview – by Mason Wang, 7B On May 26 Middle School students will perform the musical ‘Into The Woods’. Each week I will interview one cast member for TIS Times. This week I interviewed Joaquin Amigorena from Grade 7. Here it is!   M: Which character are you playing? J: I am playing Rapunzel’s Prince so I am the kind of Prince Charming for Rapunzel and as a character I am trying to marry Rapunzel. M: What sort of character is Rapunzel’s Prince? J: Well like the funny, the really fun thing about my character is that he is very silly, he is very cheesy and he is very cringey. He is kind of a very dramatic type of character. So it’s a type of character that shows his emotions in a very ridiculous and weird way. M: What do you like most about your character? J: I think it’s exactly that. I think having the character so dramatic is so cool for me because it lets me have a lot of fun with the character, explore a lot and also you know, make it as silly as possible! M: What is your favorite line? J: My favorite line? That’s a hard one, let me think… “She is as true as your maiden running for a prince. None would run from us. Yet one has.” M: How do you feel when you perform up on stage? J: Well the difference with other characters that I played and the prince is that I kind of feel that I have to be really serious. I have to really show that emotion and that sometimes can be hard because I have to be serious and strong. With the prince I kind of have more freedom and just think about having fun and that kind of lets me perform really confidently on stage. So in a sense, I feel really...

Into The Woods #3

Communications Team, Props Team and Sets Team This week’s update is about the Communications Team, the Props Team and the Sets Team. First of all I will focus on the Communications Team. The Communications Team has been working on many different things. I have been working on publishing articles. Miriam has been designing posters. Mason has been doing interviews with the cast. Finally, Felipe has been working on t-shirt orders. Our main goal is to get the word out about the musical to as many people as possible. The Props Team has been making props hence the name “Props Team”. They have been on a tight schedule making all of the props in time for the musical. Also they need to make the props for the characters to practice with. They are gathering as many props as they can so then they can fix them up to match our musical. Their goal is to spend the least amount of money while getting props or resources. Finally, there is the Sets Team. The Sets Team has been mainly working on building mini models. These mini sets are to go with the mini stage that Mike, the Middle School art teacher made for us. (Thank you Mike!) After that they are going to scale the models and build the actual sets for our musical. Their goals are to build all of the sets(mini and real) on time. We all hope that everything gets done before the musical. Even if it means more homework! We have all been working EXTREMELY hard these past few weeks. Remember to keep an eye out for my next article about the AV(lights) Team, the Backstage Team and last but DEFINITELY not least, the Performers. By Jasmine Robertson...

Into The Woods: Update #4

Backstage Team and AV Team This week’s update is about the Backstage Team and the AV(lights) Team. I will not be writing about the performers this week. That is too big a topic for me to fit into this article. So next week’s article will be about the performers only. The Backstage Team has been working very hard. The Backstage Team is in charge of figuring out who goes where and when. They are also in charge of moving all of the sets. They have been taking notes about what the performers are doing. Then they take that information and put it into figuring out where the sets will go. Then they figure out when they move the sets. Next is the AV or Lights Team. The AV Team has been working on many things. They have to figure out what kind of lighting sets the mood and when it happens. Their goal is making little shadow theatres. Because we can’t make a giant beanstalk for Jack we have to make shadow theatres. So we can still make a “beanstalk”. Make sure to keep an eye out on my next and final article. I will not be focusing on each character. But I will be focusing on the the unnamed fairytale characters and the chorus people. By Jasmine Robertson...
